The rubber plant, scientifically known as Ficus elastica, is a well-liked indoor plant that belongs to the Moraceae family. It is native to Southeast Asia, particularly India, Nepal, Bhutan, Burma, Malaysia, and Indonesia. The plant gets its name from the latex-like substance it produces, which was once used to make rubber before more efficient sources were discovered.

Key features of the rubber plant:

Appearance: Rubber plants have large, glossy, and attractive leaves that can be dark green or variegated. The leaves are typically broad and oval-shaped, and they have a distinctive leathery texture.

Growth: In its natural habitat, the rubber plant can grow to be a large tree, reaching heights of up to 100 feet (30 meters). As a houseplant, it can be pruned to maintain a more manageable size, usually ranging from 2 to 10 feet (0.6 to 3 meters) in height.

Light: Rubber plants prefer bright, indirect light. Too much direct sunlight can scorch their leaves, while too little light may cause the plant to become leggy and lose its vibrant color.

Temperature: Rubber plants flourish within a temperature range of 60°F to 75°F (15°C to 24°C), making these conditions ideal for their growth. It is important to shield them from extreme cold temperatures and sudden fluctuations in temperature, as these can negatively impact their well-being.

Watering: Rubber plants have a preference for soil that is slightly moist, but it's important to avoid overwatering them. To ensure proper watering, allow the top inch (2.5 cm) of soil to dry out before giving them more water. In the active growing season, which is typically spring and summer, they may require more frequent watering. However, during winter, it's advisable to reduce the frequency of watering to accommodate their slower growth and lower water requirements.

Humidity: Moderate to high humidity levels are beneficial, but they can tolerate normal household humidity. Regular misting or placing the plant on a humidity tray can help increase humidity.

Overall, rubber plants are relatively easy to care for and can add a touch of greenery and elegance to indoor spaces. With proper care and attention, they can be long-lasting and make excellent additions to your home or office decor.
